Re-entering the NFL, former San Diego State University punter Matt Araiza was sidelined by a rape charge for eighteen months.

Araiza’s agency announced on Thursday that the punter had signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, the defending Super Bowl champions, via a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Araiza was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in 2021, along with three other people, while he was a punter for the Buffalo Bills in 2022. When he was a punter for the SDSU football team, the claimed incident took place at a house party close to the school’s campus.

Citing insufficient evidence, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute any of the defendants. In addition, the young lady sued Araiza and the other guys in a civil complaint.

In July of last year, Araiza sued the young woman for slander. Araiza’s comeback to the NFL was made possible in December when all sides decided to abandon their litigation against one another. The civil lawsuit that was filed against the other men is still pending.

The Chiefs defeated the 49ers of San Francisco to win the Super Bowl. Araiza will probably go up against Tommy Townsend, whose contract ended earlier this month, for the starting punter spot.
