Svante Ingelsson: Sheffield Wednesday sign Hansa Rostock midfielder - BBC Sport

Danny Rohl has wasted no time in ensuring his squad is ready for the Championship season.

Sheffield Wednesday stayed up on miraculous terms after finishing the 2023/24 season with three consecutive wins, including a blockbuster 3-0 win at home against West Brom. They have since shown their intent to build on last season’s successes, with fan-favorite Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer following Rohl in signing a contract for the new season. Additionally, the signing of Yan Valery, who has Premier League experience for Southampton, has shown that Sheffield Wednesday

Former Sheffield United wingers Max Lowe and Ben Hamer have also been signed for the 2024/25 season.

They have now strengthened their midfield options with new addition Svante Ingelsson, who has spoken out following his move to S6.

Svante Ingelsson joined Hillsborough on a free transfer after spending a season in the 2.Bundesliga with Hansa Rostock.

The 26-year-old took to Instagram after joining on Friday, stating: “Very thrilled to have signed for Sheffield Wednesday. I’m really looking forward to getting the season underway.”

Ingelsson was relegated in his third season with Rostock, the 2023/24 season, before departing the club this summer.

The Swede also has experience at Udinese, where he made many appearances as a teenager but was unable to establish consistent playing time in Serie A.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Rohl will have a clear vision of what he expects from his new signing, which, if successful, may bring out the best in club captain Bannan.

Ingelsson may lack goal-scoring experience, but he can thrive at performing the dirty work, as he did for Hansa Rostock during his three seasons in Bundesliga 2.

Expect Ingelsson to cover every blade on the Hillsborough field, as he possesses an engine capable of lasting a full 90 minutes or completely turning a game around if called upon from the bench.

Ingelsson is used to playing both attacking and defensive roles in the centre, as well as being shifted to left wing on occasion, as he has done this season.

Standing 6ft2, he’ll be used to break up play in the park’s center, allowing Bannan to focus on playmaking.

Bannan and Ingelsson are likely to start in midfield against Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday.

Rohl may have uncovered a hidden gem who is ideal for the German system in exchange for a free move.

Sheffield Wednesday announced on Friday the permanent signing of Swedish midfielder Svante Ingelsson from Hansa Rostock, following their relegation from 2.Bundesliga.

Ingelsson becomes the Owls’ fourth permanent signing this summer, following the additions of Ben Hamer and Max Lowe on free transfers and Yan Valery on a permanent contract from Angers.

Danny Rohl has overseen a very solid start to the preseason, with players reporting back for training and testing on Friday.

Sheffield Wednesday’s first home game of the 2024/25 Championship season, against Wayne Rooney and Plymouth Argyle, is just over five weeks away.

There also remains a lot of work for Rohl and head of recruitment Kevin Beadell to do in the transfer market, with the Owls yet to make any loan moves.

For teams in the Championship, and for Sheffield Wednesday most seasons, the loan market is a very important one.

The Owls’ January loan additions probably kept them in the Championship last season, with James Beadle, Ian Poveda, and Ike Ugbo all joining and playing key parts in the club’s 20th-place finish.

Once again, the team will undoubtedly use loan signings. But that will undoubtedly happen later in the summer, after Premier League clubs have had the opportunity to confirm their own summer transfer plans.

We witnessed this last summer, when Sheffield Wednesday signed John Buckley and Jeff Hendrick on loan on deadline day.
