Breaking: Edmonton Oilers closing in on deal to sign 31 year old right wing on free transfer

The Edmonton Oilers are apparently keeping a close eye on Los Angeles Kings unrestricted free agent winger Viktor Arvidsson, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. While Arvidsson is sure to receive interest from a number of teams, the Oilers appear to be particularly interested in the veteran winger.

“I think he’s going to have more opportunity than signing a one-year, rebound deal in Edmonton,” Seravalli said. “The Oilers have definitely kept him on their radar. Arvidsson makes so much sense from a competitive standpoint. You mentioned a pain in the arse to play against; he’s someone who can handle every game circumstance, whether it’s high-skill, speed — though he’s not a burner — or a physical, rough game.

Arvidsson, 31, is coming off a seven-year contract that earned him $4.25 million annually. Despite being limited by injuries, he has been a consistent producer across his 10-year, 546-game career. The injury situation is sure to concern most Oilers fans. However, if he is willing to test out for the Oilers on a short-term deal with a team-friendly salary in order to increase his point totals, he may be a good fit.

According to Evolving-Hockey, Arvidsson’s most likely free agency contract will be for one year and cost somewhat more than $3 million. If he signs a three-year contract, his annual salary may reach $4.5 million.

Edmonton is reportedly considering big-money extensions for Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, and Evan Bouchard over the next few years. As a result, they will require short-term, mid- or low-range contracts to fill out the roster without committing too much to anyone. Arvidsson’s constant performance is perfect, but it is his persistence that has the Oilers interested.

His style of play and competitive personality make him difficult to play against, and the Oilers require more of that.
