Just in: Chicago Blackhawks closing in on deal to sign 25 year old forward.

The Blackhawks were reportedly one among several teams that inquired about Hurricanes forward Martin Necas.

Apr 14, 2024; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas (88) skates against the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center.

This offseason is crucial for the Chicago Blackhawks. Kyle Davidson has stated that the team needs to show tangible improvement in the third year of a rebuild. In 2024-25, the Blackhawks’ on-ice performance must improve over the previous season.

The Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly keeping an eye on numerous players as they look to change up their roster. One in particular is very much in line with what Davidson and the Blackhawks want to do. Martin Necas, coming off his second-best NHL season, is eligible for a $3.5 million qualifying offer as a restricted free agent. Perhaps the Blackhawks make sense as a possible option if Carolina wants to move the Czech forward?

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, this is exactly the case. According to reports, five to seven teams have inquired about Necas’ availability, including the Blackhawks.

It makes complete sense for the Blackhawks to inquire. Necas is only 25 years old, and with his RFA status, he can be managed for the next year or so if the Blackhawks want him to follow the same path as the rest of the roster. Although some of the larger unrestricted free agents will cost dollars and terms, Necas might be had for a reasonable fee and terms. Sure, the limit has raised heading into this summer, but Davidson may not want to use the new room just yet. However, purchasing Necas’ rights will undoubtedly cost assets.

What would be required to make a trade for Necas? As things are, the Hurricanes see Necas as a “budding star” and anticipate a significant comeback. As highlighted by Jeff Marek on a recent episode of “32 Thoughts: The Podcast,” Carolina would most likely seek more than prospects.

Taylor Raddysh could be the Blackhawks’ first option for Necas. Additionally, an Andreas Athanasiou-type player and possibly a defenseman would be required. If that plus a draft pick is the probable price, is it worth it for Chicago?

Certainly Kyle Davidson is doing his due diligence, but if the price is too high, one has to believe he will reject Carolina’s demands and look for other ways to strengthen the roster.
