Must Read: The best and worst of Manchester United in their miserable loss at Crystal Palace

Along with efforts from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell, Michael Olise bagged an outstanding double, leaving an injury-ravaged squad with little response to the home side’s deadly onslaught.

After what is likely the worst performance of manager Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford to date, the outcome drops United to eighth place with a negative goal differential.

Who made an impression at Selhurst Park, then? Using 90min’s player ratings, here are Man Utd’s best and worst players from the 4-0 loss.

This is a little awkward, I guess. In all honesty, United’s Monday night performance didn’t really have a “best player”—rather, it was more about those who were less guilty than others. That applies to the aforementioned quartet.

While they were all caught up in the storm, Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Alejandro Garnacho, and Kobbie Mainoo caused the least amount of damage to United’s forces that evening.

In a challenging season, Mainoo, Garnacho, and Hojlund all shown promise, although Mount has only recently recovered from the injury issues that dogged his first year at Old Trafford. They undoubtedly need to learn from such a painful experience even though they weren’t at fault for the significant loss.

As a stand-in center back, Casemiro’s performance has left it hard to know where to begin. Olise’s decision-making only grew worse as the game went on, beginning with his incredibly easy roll away from the Brazilian.

After racing out to give Palace the lead, the former Real Madrid midfielder’s night took a turn for the worst when Daniel Munoz stole the ball from him. Munoz then helped Olise score his second goal of the game.

United could have used a mature performance from a guy who has achieved everything at the club level with so many absentees. Rather, he exhibited the elegance of a dump truck in reverse without any tires.

It is evident that Jonny Evans, the veteran defender, is not the only source of United’s issues. In 2023–24, the Northern Irishman has been a rock at times, and with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof all out of commission due to injuries, the team would be worse off without him.

Given his personal health concerns that kept him out of the game for a month, Evans naturally ignored it right away. Mateta was only able to hurl a leg in Mateta’s direction before the striker’s spectacular goal put Palace ahead 2-0.

Evans was powerless against the relentless Palace attack, but it was obvious that Ten Hag needed someone to play beside Casemiro at the back.

Although defense has long been praised as Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s strongest suit, none of those abilities were on display as he returned to his former haunt.

Due to a lack of defensive organization, the former Palace defender was unsure of whether to pursue Olise or Munoz, the Eagles’ flying wing-back, and as a result, he was left stunned and perplexed as the two players scored and assisted for braces.

Nor does he appear to be at ease with possession.
