The Break Down: Rangers host an Ibrox VIP transfer red carpet as MGT pursues a £3 million-rated international star

The 22-year-old, who is currently signed to Levski Sofia in Bulgaria, attended Sunday’s 4-1 victory over Kilmarnock by Rangers. As manager Philippe Clement approaches the completion of his first summer transfer window acquisition, the team is in advanced talks with Panama international Jose Cordoba.

The 22-year-old defender is wanted by the Ibrox team as Clement looks to bolster his options in the backline before taking over for the first time as manager of the team.

Amidst uncertainties surrounding the futures of multiple first-team players, Cordoba has emerged as the Belgian manager’s main priority ahead of what may prove to be another hectic summer of activity. Talks have already taken place.

The Rangers Review claims that Cordoba received an invitation to watch the Light Blues’ 4-1 victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday, which preserved their hopes of winning the Scottish Premiership, as a guest of the team. According to the report, Rangers will now attempt to complete a deal for the center half, who still has a year left on his contract with Bulgarian team Levski Sofia.

Ten times awarded a cap for his nation, Cordoba came to Europe in 2020 with La Liga team Celta Vigo, where he was limited to playing for the Spanish franchise’s B-team after rising through the youth systems of Independiente in his native country. After moving to the Bulgarian capital two years ago, he played for Etar for a season before becoming well-known with Sofia.

Leon Balogun, whose contract expires at the end of the season, and periphery players Ben Davies and Leon King, who don’t seem to have much of a future in Govan, present Clement with some difficult choices. Moreover, Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia have expressed interest in regular player Connor Goldson, and captain James Tavernier has also been linked to a potential reunion with the former Gers manager.

Central American reports state that the Glasgow giants may have to pay up to £3 million to sign Cordoba, who is being pursued by clubs in France and Turkey.

The summer transfer window offers Clement his first opportunity to truly make his mark on the team he took over from Michael Beale in October, and Nils Koppen, the new director of football recruiting, is expected to have a significant impact on prospective arrivals and departures during the close season.

Oscar Cortes, a winger for RC Lens who is currently on loan, is also expected to sign a permanent contract soon. The two are quick to scout and identify key targets who are 24 years of age or younger and who can be of great future worth to the team.
