Just now: pitcher on the list of 15-day injured

With a rotator cuff strain, pitcher Josh Sborz of the Texas Rangers has been placed on the 15-day injured list, the team said today. To replace him on the active roster, the Rangers will make an equivalent move tomorrow.

After leaving yesterday’s game in the middle of the batter, this action was anticipated. Sborz had the same problem when he was placed on the disabled list in early April; he was activated on April 25 after little over a 15-day stay. Nevertheless, he battled and didn’t appear quite right during his next two outings after a strong first performance upon his comeback. He walked the first batter he saw on four pitches in the second game of yesterday’s doubleheader, then was lifted due to an injury after he went 3-1 against the second batter.

Grant Anderson, Antoine Kelly, and Jack Leiter (who was sent back to the minors after serving as the 27th man yesterday) are the only healthy pitchers on the 40-man roster who are not currently in the major leagues. Given his familiarity with the Round Rock-Arlington shuffle, Anderson appears to be the most likely option to be brought up if Leiter isn’t brought up again until next week, when the Rangers will need him to start again.
