Breaking! Ex-Cowboys QB Back on the Market After Broncos Release

Denver Broncos release former Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci

Following his release from the Denver Broncos this week, the former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys is once again available. Although the Cowboys currently have no shortage of capable quarterbacks, some supporters may become more interested in Ben DiNucci’s availability.

After serving on the team’s practice squad for the previous year and a half, Denver released DiNucci on May 8. The Broncos roster move was first reported by ESPN writer Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler said on X, “According to a source, quarterback Ben DiNucci has been released by the #Broncos.”

DiNucci talked about his release on social media about an hour later. Although the quarterback’s day has undoubtedly been disappointing, he claims he is not dwelling on it.

“The Broncos have released me. Every step of the way! Anticipating exciting things ahead,” DiNucci wrote.

DiNucci is currently surplus to requirements as a result of the Broncos’ offseason signings of quarterbacks. As the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, Denver selected Bo Nix, however they later traded days before to the start of the draft, for former QB Zach Wilson of the New York Jets.

DiNucci was never going to make the roster with Jarrett Stidham also in the mix.

Ben DiNucci Seeking the Next Group
Following his time in college at Pittsburgh and James Madison, DiNucci was selected by the Cowboys in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft to make his NFL debut. Dallas was committed to QB Dak Prescott and had backup QB Andy Dalton, thus DiNucci was a “flyer” pick.

Although DiNucci was not expected to do much, he was given a lot of attention. Following injuries to Dalton and Prescott, the former Duke played in three games, including a start. Regretfully, DiNucci’s experience was not particularly favorable.

DiNucci completed 23 of 43 throws for 219 yards that season with no interceptions or touchdowns, according to Pro Football Reference. Although the completion % and the absence of interceptions are positive metrics, a review of the tape reveals that DiNucci had difficulty producing any noteworthy plays.

Garrett Gilbert was named the Cowboys’ starting backup following his lone start. Over the course of the following season, DiNucci alternated between the practice squad and the starting lineup before being cut before the 2022 season.

Cowboys re-signing backup QB Cooper Rush to two-year contract

He returned to the NFL after making an impression in the 2023 XFL season. DiNucci finished second in the XFL in terms of passing touchdowns and led the league in yards and completions.

On May 8, the Cowboys also make a roster move.
The Broncos were letting DiNucci go, and the Cowboys were almost ready to let Martavis Bryant go as well. Bryant, a former fourth-round selection, was attempting to return to the NFL after a five-year absence.

Bryant broke the league’s drug policy back in 2018 when he was a member of the Oakland Raiders. After Bryant was eventually reinstated in 2023, the Cowboys signed the former Clemson receiver on November 6 of that same year.

Bryant was unable to have an influence throughout the season’s last stretch, though. In actuality, despite signing, he never set foot on the field.
