Just Now: A pair from Middlesbrough’s academy sign new deals as a 2022 debutant reveals their departure.

While defender George McCormick and goalkeeper Nathan Fisher of the Academy have extended their contracts to stay at Middlesbrough for the upcoming campaign, fellow youth prospect Joe Gibson has confirmed his departure.

Fisher, 19, was a member of the senior Boro team that went to Portugal for preseason play last summer. He would go on to play six games for the under-21 team during the season’s opening stretch as they went undefeated and qualified for the Premier League 2 playoffs.

He also spent time on loan at Newton Aycliffe and Redcar Athletic. The Newcastle goalkeeper, who joined Boro’s academy from Sunderland in 2021, was set to expire his contract this summer. However, he has already inked a fresh one-year contract.

The 19-year-old McCormick has agreed to a new two-year contract with the Boro. The defender, who joined Boro from the under-9s, was formerly the under-18s’ captain. This season, he has made 12 appearances for Mark Tinkler’s team.

But Joe Gibson, who began at the under-9 level and spent 15 years in the club’s academy, has announced that he would be departing Boro this summer. The adaptable midfield player made his FA Cup third-round debut against Mansfield in January 2022, playing at right wing-back. With a strong performance in that game, he recorded an assist.

After making an impression for the under-18 and under-21 teams, he was called up to the starting lineup for a league match against Bournemouth earlier in the season. In November 2019, he signed his first professional contract. However, the Chilton native’s prospects have been severely damaged by injury.

After suffering an ankle injury in the previous season, the 22-year-old had to have three procedures and missed more than a year of play before making his under-21 debut in a defeat to Fulham in February. Although he was loaned to Darlington in March, he only played a brief cameo for the Quakers.

“Well after 15 years my time at @theboroofficial has came to an end,” Gibson wrote on social media to signal his departure, even though the club’s official retained list has not yet been released. I’ve made some amazing memories and made lifelong friends. I want to wish the absolute best of luck for the future to everyone who has supported me along the way.”
