Just In: Ipswich Town’s injury concerns as Football Manager discusses crucial roster decisions for the last day of play

Kieran McKenna acknowledges that Ipswich Town must address a few minor injury issues ahead of this Saturday’s crucial matchup at Portman Road against Huddersfield Town. The Tractor Boys are aware that they are in the running to be promoted to the Premier League after defeating Coventry City at the CBS Arena on Tuesday night.

After 22 years away from the top flight, a point against Huddersfield will be sufficient to guarantee the club’s return, forcing Leeds United to go via the play-offs in order to maintain their own prospects of promotion. Leeds’ only chance to pass Ipswich and place within the top two is if the Suffolk team loses to the Terriers, who were all but eliminated after their draw with Birmingham City at the John Smith’s Stadium last weekend.

The fact that Ipswich is carrying a few injuries ahead of the weekend match may give the Whites hope even though the odds are stacked against them. Leif Davis, who was formerly from Leeds, and Harry Clarke have also been dealing with injuries lately. Wes Burns, who has only recently returned from injury, was forced to leave the game in the middle of the week due to a cramping problem.

Although McKenna maintains that there are no significant injuries at the Tractor Boys camp, the small issues that a few of his players are facing may force some tough choices to be made on Saturday morning.

Before welcoming the West Yorkshire team, he stated, “We’ve got a quite a few, as you do at this stage of the season, especially coming off two quick games.” We will evaluate one or two of the knocks and niggles that we have in the morning. These things happen when there is a short turnaround.

“As of right now, none of our players have long-term injuries that would prevent them from playing right away, but we do have a few players who are dealing with some issues that could affect how many minutes they can play or how involved they are tomorrow.

“On Saturday morning, we will review all of those choices to make sure our team is sufficiently rested and prepared to execute.”

Leeds will finish third in the Championship and play either Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion, or Hull City in a two-leg semifinal if Ipswich has enough left in the tank to defeat Andre Breitenreiter’s Huddersfield.

The Whites would play away in the first of those matches on Sunday, May 12, and then travel to Elland Road for the crucial second leg on Thursday, May 17. After that, Daniel Farke’s team would want to advance to Wembley Stadium on May 26, where a 90-minute, “do or die” match will decide promotion.
