Carolina Panthers Re-Sign Long Snapper JJ Jansen - Sports Illustrated Carolina Panthers News, Analysis and More

With new head coach Dave Canales, J.J. Jansen will be a part of yet another football era that he has witnessed a great deal throughout his tenure with the Carolina Panthers. Jansen and Carolina have reached an agreement to terms with the seasoned long snapper on a one-year contract, according to Joe Person of The Athletic on Friday afternoon.

Jansen broke the franchise mark for the most career games played (226) a few seasons ago. It is currently up to 243. Jansen intends to play until he is forty years old, according to Person. Nobody will ever smell that record if he can pull that off.

Jansen has played for John Fox, Ron Rivera, Perry Fewell (interim), Matt Rhule, Steve Wilks (interim), Frank Reich, Chris Tabor (interim), and now, Dave Canales. Although long snappers doesn’t get a lot of attention, he’s a key piece to the special teams unit. Similar to offensive linemen, the less you hear his name, the better.

It also didn’t help the cause that he suffered a knee injury in 2021, cutting his rookie season short. After being let go by the Panthers in ’22, Nixon had a cup of coffee with the Seattle Seahawks spending six days on the roster before being waived.

With Christian Wilkins set to become an unrestricted free agent, Miami needs to have a plan in place incase he were to leave. Nixon won’t be the answer but he could supply them with depth.
