NFL Rumors: Aaron Jones’ Agent, Packers Met About Possible Contract Pay Cut

NFL Rumors: Aaron Jones' Agent, Packers Met About Possible Contract Pay Cut | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report

The Green Bay Packers met with running back Aaron Jones’ agent at the NFL Scouting Combine this week to discuss a possible pay cut for Jones in the final year of his contract, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein.

According to Silverstein, the two sides are looking to find a number that would lower his salary cup number and match what Jones believes he could earn in free agency.

If they can’t reach an agreement in the next two weeks, the Packers could release Jones and he would have the opportunity to weigh his options in free agency, per Silverstein.

Jones is entering the final year of a four-year, $48 million contract and will earn a base salary of $11 million, potentially earning $258,000 in per-game roster bonuses and a workout bonus of $500,000.

The Packers currently have an estimated $12,734,061 in cap space, per Spotrac, but could add more room with a few roster adjustments. Green Bay already adjusted

and Preston Smith’s contracts, cutting around $7 million in cap space, and Silverstein noted that Green Bay could cut left tackle David Bakhtiari and linebacker De’Vondre Campbell to create around $30 million in cap space heading into free agency.

Jones, 29, played in 11 games last season, notching 656 yards and a pair of touchdowns along with 233 yards and a touchdown through the air. He was integral to the Packers’ wild-card win against the Dallas Cowboys, picking up 118 yards and three touchdowns in the win. He also had 108 rushing yards against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round.

While Green Bay would like to hold onto Jones, more cap space means it could go after a running back in free agency to replace him. This year’s free agency will see several top running backs hit the market, including Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, Saquon Barkley and more.

Silverstein also noted Green Bay could be looking to extend quarterback Jordan Love with the added cap room.
