Matt Rempe, a forward for the New York Rangers, was sent off the ice during Thursday’s victory over the New Jersey Devils due to a vicious hit that left opponent Nathan Bastian bleeding.

On his opening shift in the Rangers’ 5-1 victory at the Prudential Center in Newark, the 21-year-old Rempe hit Bastian hard against the wall, breaking his steak in the process and knocking the Devils forward.

Based on the blood visible on his nose, Bastian had suffered a head injury. By the end of the first quarter, he was walking into New Jersey’s locker room, which was how his night ended.

As Siegenthaler stood up for his colleague, he instantly issued Rempe a challenge to a fight. But, Rempe dismissed the prospect of a rematch by throwing two punches at the Devils defenseman.

After being initially called for a roughing penalty, he was subsequently dismissed with a match penalty.

Shortly after making his NHL debut, Rempe got into a brawl with Islanders winger Matt Martin in front of 80,000 spectators at MetLife earlier this week.

In addition to becoming the first player in NHL history to make his debut in an outdoor game, Rempe also probably established the mark for the fastest fight to start a career and, thus, the fastest penalty in league history.

Martin and Rempe lined up opposite each other at center ice for a faceoff less than ninety-nine seconds into the Empire State rivalry game, which was played in front of just under 80,000 spectators in New Jersey.

The bout lasted about thirty seconds, during which time neither fighter used gloves when throwing punches.

Throughout his time playing junior and minor league hockey, Rempe had a reputation as an enforcer. He is a third or fourth line player who doesn’t hesitate to use his physicality to his advantage.

Thursday’s 5-1 victory over the rival Devils saw the Rangers tie their longest winning streak (9) in eight seasons. Alexis Lafreniere scored two goals. For New York, further goals came from Mike Zibanejad, Chris Keider, and Vincent Trocheck.

The Rangers’ latest 10-game winning streak came in 1972–73; the previous record was in 1939–40, when New York won its third of its four Stanley Cup victories.

In the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division, New York (36-16-3) is in first place.
