After spending the last week in the hospital, legendary Chicago Bears player Steve McMichael, who is suffering from ALS, is anticipated to return home on Thursday, according to longtime publicist Betsy Shepherd.

Three years ago, McMichael, 66, disclosed to the public that he had been diagnosed with ALS. Last Thursday, a urinary tract infection sent him to a suburban hospital’s intensive care unit. The family made the announcement on Saturday that he was receiving a blood transfusion and had contracted MRSA, a staph infection that can be challenging to treat due to its resistance to several treatments.

McMichael’s family issued a statement and gave an update on his recuperation on Tuesday. Misty McMichael, his wife, acknowledged his fortitude while pleading for unceasing prayers.

“What a tough guy,” Misty remarked. “He is a Mongo, and his DNA is unique!” Don’t stop praying! Many thanks!

The guy known by many as “Ming The Merciless” and “Mongo” (after the character in “Blazing Saddles” who knocked out a horse) remained a major figure in Chicago long after his playing days ended, whether he was frightening opponents or talking about the Bears on sports talk radio. In the late 1990s, he also wrestled professionally for five years.
