Auston Matthews became the fastest player to score 50 goals in a season in nearly 30 years on Wednesday night as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Arizona Coyotes 6-3. Scoring both his 50th and 51st goal in just his 54th game, Matthews is on pace to score 76 times by the end of the season, putting himself and his 2023-24 campaign among the greatest single-season efforts of all-time.

But what is Matthews’ ceiling? With nine goals in his last four games, you have to think at some point the 26-year-old forward will slow down and go scoreless for a number of games in the final 27 contests the Maple Leafs. But with Matthews, anything is possible.

On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss Matthews’ historic night and just how high the ceiling is for the Hart Trophy candidate.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I know some people were laughing on social media about the different math for what Matthews is on pace to score, some people were saying 76, 77, 78, but what is the ceiling here? It feels like 70 is going to happen because he only needs 19 more, but is it somewhere around 75, maybe higher?

Frank Seravalli: I would think that 70 is a lock, but it’s all going to come down to health. What’s the ceiling? Seventy-five or 76? With those hat tricks baked in, it does inflate the numbers a little bit. There’s gotta be some stretch where he slows down for a two-to-three game period, but we haven’t seen it yet.

Matthews’ confidence and swagger is off the charts. He’s back to being the assassin he was a few years ago when he walked into a building, you knew he was scoring. That’s a scary thought for the rest of the league.
