Tennessee had a chance to take sole ownership of second place in the SEC standings heading into tonight’s game. What was it that prevented them? A Vanderbilt squad has just defeated Texas A&M for their biggest victory of the year. In comparison to their in-state rivals, how would the Volunteers fare? Well, Tennessee dominated this game from the very first possession. 88-53, Tennessee defeated Vanderbilt, driven by extraordinarily productive performances from Zakai Zeigler, Josiah Jordan-James, and Santiago Vescovi. To be completely honest, though, it didn’t feel that close. Tennessee will move up to second place in the league, one game behind Alabama, based on the outcome of the Kentucky-Auburn game.

The guards mentioned above all had outstanding games, and Tennessee added 14 points and five assists.

The two most important things to remember from this game were Tennessee’s ability to score when there were mistakes and to make three-pointers. The Volunteers made a season-high 14 three-pointers, shooting over 45 percent from outside the arc, and converted Vanderbilt’s 19 turnovers into over 30 points.

In his brief playing time, Tobe Awaka put up a strong showing as well, scoring nine points, including a few difficult transition baskets. The fact that Jordan Gainey and Jahmai Mashack combined to shoot 1/12 from the field is the lone drawback from this game. But you have to believe that this would be the game to struggle through if there was one.

The Volunteers’ next game is a Tuesday night matchup against the Missouri Tigers in Columbia.
