New York Giants Not Expected To Franchise Tag Saquon Barkley For 2024 Season Leaving Door Open For Possible Exit
The New York Giants-Saquon Barkley saga dragged on last season with both sides unwilling to compromise on a deal. This year, the organization faces a similar situation but seems to have a plan in place.
According to a recent piece by Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, the Giants are “unlikely” to use their franchise tag on Barkley as they did last March. Negotiations went back and forth last year but a longterm deal could not be finalized with the Giants eventually using the tag to retain the highly-rated running back.
The 27-year-old back is expected to hit the free agency market if a deal is not reached. NFL teams can begin to franchise players from February 20 to March 5.
Barkley played on a $10.1 million contract last year and that figure would jump to over $12 million if New York were to tag him again. According to Schwartz, it is investment general manager Joe Schoen will likely avoid for a player that has struggled with injuries over a six-year NFL career.
The former Penn State running back was the second overall pick in the 2018 draft with the Giants selecting him over players like Josh Allen, Denzel Ward and Roquan Smith.
In 2022, Barkley finished with 1312 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns and averaged 4.4 yards per carry. Those numbers dropped off a bit in 2023 with him recording 962 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns and an average of 3.9 yards per attempt.
If Barkley does enter the open market this offseason, there will be plenty of interest for the two-time Pro Bowler. The Cincinnati Bengals and Houston Texans have been mentioned as possible landing spots for the running back.
No, the Seahawks won’t franchise tag Leonard Williams
Seattle paid a hefty price to acquire the impact defensive lineman at the trade deadline, but the cap hit associated with using the franchise tag on Williams would be too costly.
The 2024 NFL Combine is just around the corner, and draft season is beginning to grab the attention of NFL fans and observers. However, the new NFL league year will start prior to the draft, and with the start of the new league year comes free agency. With free agency comes hope, dreams and speculation about the new names and faces that could be added to a roster, as well worries about the names that teams could see depart.
And, when it comes to players departing their old team, there is a powerful tool teams have at their disposal to prevent those key players from leaving. That tool is, of course, the franchise tag, and Tuesday marks the first day that teams across the league are able to apply either the franchise or transition tender tags to pending free agents, with the ability to use these tags through 4:00 pm New York time on Tuesday, March 5.
For the Seattle Seahawks, one of the big names that has been much discussed as a potential extension candidate prior to the start of free agency in March is defensive tackle Leonard Williams. Williams was, of course, acquired from the New York Giants at the trade deadline in 2023 in exchange for second and fifth round picks, and then in ten games for the Hawks recorded 41 tackles, 9 TFL, 11 quarterback hits and 4.0 sacks.
