|Breaking: oregon becomes favourite in landing a 5-star DL prospect top ranked
Oregon is a member of the 15-team list of finalists for a five-star defensive lineman.
The Oregon Ducks have made the cut for one of the nation’s top overall prospects in the 2026 class. Defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart shared that he was down to 15 schools on his social media channels and would focus his attention on those programs only. Stewart will be considering college programs from across the country as he is set to become one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the 2026 recruiting class for college football.
For Oregon, this gives the Ducks a chance at landing a five-star prospect but also their second elite defensive lineman in the 2026 recruiting class, an area that Oregon head coach Dan Lanning has made it a staple of recruiting every single season. Oregon holds a commitment from the No. 2 defensive lineman in the country for the 2026 class while also being a player for three other prospects ranked inside the top 10 at the defensive line position.
Along with Oregon, LSU, Ohio State, Texas A&M, USC, Tennessee, Florida State, Alabama, Penn State, Georgia, Auburn, Texas, Miami, Colorado, and Michigan made the cut for Stewart.
The 6-foot-6 Stewart is rated as the No. 3 player in the country, the No. 1 defensive lineman in the country, and the No. 2 player in the state of Louisiana by 247Sports. He is rated as the No. 1 overall player in the country for the 2026 class by the 247Sports Composite.
Here is the scouting report by 247Sports’ Gabe BRooks back on August 11th, 2023.
Large-framed front-line defensive prospect with rare physical traits relative to his age. Several excellent camp performances put him on the radar very early. Simply needs more reps in pads but they will come, and has flashed explosive disruptiveness in early game exposure. Excellent height with plus length and a relatively lean build on a frame with immense bulking capacity.
Better flexibility and bend than you might expect. Flashes hand violence and point-of-attack power. Capable of dip-and-bend ability from the edge with size and strength to play the interior. Still developing pass-rush repertoire but has shown encouraging technical nuance and feel for his age. Elite young defensive line prospect given outstanding physical tools and promising movement ability. Possesses exceptionally high long-term developmental ceiling.
Oregon currently holds one verbal commitment for the 2026 recruiting class. Tony Cumberland out of Desert Mountain High School (Scottsdale, Ariz.) committed to the Duck program on September 23rd, 2023. He’s rated as the No. 10 prospect in the country and the No. 2 defensive lineman in the class.
Redshirt recap: Which Oregon freshmen redshirt and which didn’t in 2023?
Oregon’s 2023 class proved instrumental in this year’s team success. Eleven members of the class played in at least five games to avoid redshirting.
Dan Lanning’s refrain for playing true freshmen has been heard many times “if you’re good enough, you’re old enough,” he likes to say.
It sure seemed like Lanning’s second class in Eugene was plenty good enough. Nearly half of the 28 true freshmen saw enough game action in 2023 to avoid redshirting.
True freshmen played an awful lot more in 2023 than in 2022. Not only did 11 play more than five games, but seven appeared in at least 10 with four seeing the field in all 14.
It’s worth pointing out that postseason games do not count towards the redshirt number, meaning action served in the Fiesta Bowl will not be taken into account.

Offensive lineman Iapani Laloulu (454 total snaps played / 413 offensive snaps) — Often referred to by his middle name “Poncho”, Laloulu was the program’s most impactful true freshmen in 2023. He averaged nearly 30 snaps played per game, and essentially acted as an extension of the starting five. Laloulu routinely entered at one of the guard spots early in the first half to relieve the veterans. He made his first career start at center in the Fiesta Bowl, and performed admirably. Laloulu was named a Freshman All-American by several outlets, including 247Sports. With Jackson Powers-Johnson set to enter the 2024 NFL Draft, Laloulu is expected take over at center next fall.
