Former Ohio State quarterbacks coach not staying with Buckeyes after all

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former Ohio State football quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis has moved on to another Power 5 coaching opportunity.

A Utah spokesperson confirmed Dennis has been hired as an offensive analyst on coach Kyle Whittingham’s staff. Dennis is listed as an employee in the Utah personnel directory.

Ohio State did not renew Dennis’ contract when it brought Bill O’Brien on as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. However, when announcing that change, OSU said it anticipated Dennis would “transition into a still-to-be-determined role with the program.” Presumably that would have been an analyst-like role similar to the one he is taking at Utah.

Dennis had spent his entire coaching career at Ohio State following his playing career as a Georgia Tech wide receiver and defensive back. The son-in-law of former Buckeye coach Urban Meyer moved up from intern to graduate assistant to senior quality control coach before a four-year stint as quarterbacks coach.

Ohio State may soon need a replacement for O’Brien, too, as he is considered the lead candidate for the Boston College head coach position. Per multiple reports, the school began those interviews Tuesday.

Day and Whittingham have developed a friendly coaching relationship in the past few years, stemming in part from OSU’s come-from-behind 48-45 Rose Bowl victory in 2021. Utah had won at least 10 games in three straight non-pandemic seasons before finishing 8-5 last season. In each of those 10-win seasons, the Utes posted a top-25 offense in yards per play.
