Power Five Stat Leaders: Two Hurricanes Finish in The Top 5 In Statistical Categories

Brashard Smith and Francisco “Kiko” Mauigoa End Season Top 5 In A Power Five Stats

There is no disputing that Miami’s season did not go as planned, particularly following their season-opening victory over Texas A&M. However, due to injuries, creative play decisions, and other factors, the Hurricanes finished the season with a 7-6 record and lost in the Pinstripe Bowl.

While the squad recently learned that Washington State transfer Cam Ward will join the club, there are still some positives to reflect on from the previous season before spring football begins.

With the NCAA football season officially over last week when Michigan defeated Washington in the National Championship, two Miami Hurricanes finished among the top five Power Five schools in their individual metrics.

The first of these was Brashard Smith, who just announced his transfer to SMU after three years at Miami. This season, Smith served as the team’s kickoff return specialist, accumulating 579 return yards and one score. Smith’s 579 return yards ranked fourth among Power Five programs, edging Arizona State’s Elijhah Badger.

Final Power 5 Stat Leaderboard (Kick Return Yards) 1. Drae McCray, Texas Tech (717) 2. Major Everhart, TCU (647) 3. Brian Battie, Auburn (645) 4. Brashard Smith, Miami (FL) (579) 5. Elijhah Badger, Arizona State (578)

Francisco “Kiko” Mauigoa was the other Hurricane to finish in the top five of a static division. Coming over from Washington State to play with his brother, Kiko was dominant in his first season with the Canes. He not only led the squad in tackles, but also in tackles for loss (18), which ranked fourth in the country. Mauigoa decided to return to Coral Gables for his final season in 2024.

Final Power 5 Stat Leaderboard (Tackles for Loss) 1. Laiatu Latu, UCLA (21.5) 2. Tre’mon Morris-Brash, UCF (20.5) 3. Aaron Casey, Indiana (20.0) 4. Francisco Mauigoa, Miami (FL) (18.0) 5. Payton Wilson, NC State (17.5)

With the previously mentioned Ward and other players on the roster seeking to make a step forward next season, the Hurricanes are expecting for more stat-sheet fillers as they compete for a berth in the first 12-team College Football Playoff in 2024.
