Los Angeles Rams Mock Draft 2024: Building For The Future In the 2024 NFL Draft
The 2023 Los Angeles Rams season far exceeded expectations. A franchise that most believed would be tanking, instead, made the NFL playoffs. But, the campaign is over for Los Angeles with attention shifting towards the Rams mock draft and how this team builds for the future.
While Puka Nacua, Kobie Turner, Steve Avila, and Kyren Williams are building blocks for the next Rams’ core, Los Angeles must also be realistic. There are aging stars on both sides of the ball and with Sean McVay now committed to the future, the Rams need to start preparing for it.
Before diving into our Rams mock draft, here’s a quick rundown of everything you need to know before the 2024 NFL Draft.
Los Angeles squeezed a lot more production out of its defense than you’d expect based on the talent level heading into the season. It’s a testament to Rams’ defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who maximized every player he could and did wonders with the first- and second-year talents. However, some of the Rams’ success against the pass should be more attributed to the pass rush than the secondary.
While heavy consideration is given to a tackle here, the best option on the board – Amarius Mims – isn’t a plug-and-play starter at left tackle that we’d have confidence in. So, cornerback becomes the next need to address and Kool-AId McKinstry is easily one of the best players available at the 20th pick.
McKinstry dominated this past season for the Alabama Crimson Tide, allowing just a 48.7 percent completion rate on 39 targets. He posted the sixth-highest forced incompletion rate (26 percent) among draft-eligible cornerbacks, holding opponents to a 73.1 NFL QB rating when they threw his way. McKinsnstry would immediately become the Rams’ No. 1 cornerback, upgrading this pass defense.
Los Angeles simply did not get enough from its safeties this season. Jordan Fuller was fine for a former Day 3 pick, but he also allowed 3 touchdowns in pass coverage. Quentin Lake, the 2022 sixth–round surrendered a 96.3 QB rating when targeted in pass coverage. If the Rams want to use multiple safeties, they need someone who can truly be a deep centerfielder.
Calen Bullock is that player. Over the last two seasons as a safety roaming around on the USC Trojans defense, Bullock recorded 11 pass breakups and 7 interceptions, holding opponents to a sub-90 QB rating. Bullock boasts the length and athleticism that would allow a coaching staff to drop him back in man coverage or use his speed and aggressiveness to act as a centerfielder on downfield passes.
One of the top safeties in the 2024 NFL Draft class, Bullock would bring instincts, athleticism and versatility to the Rams’ secondary. While he might not reach an All-Pro ceiling, he could become a multi-time Pro Bowl selection if he fills out his frame and becomes a bit more disciplined.
Aaron Donald, Kobie Turner and Byron Young helped the Rams sustain a league-average pass rush in 2023. Considering what expectations were for this unit coming into the season, that’s an accomplishment. With that said, there’s still plenty of room to improve when you are 14th in pass-rush win rate (42 percent), 28th in pressure rate (18.7 percent) and 23rd in sack rate (6.4 percent).
